In Search Of Atlantis Proves Sitchin

By J. M. Cornwell (

In 1995 Rand and Rose Flem-Ath decided to finally publish their findings in a book called appropriately, WHEN THE SKY FELL: IN SEARCH OF ATLANTIS. In groundbreaking work they posited that the theory of plate tectonics and crustal movement proved that Atlantis was right before us all the time. The only difference was that Atlantis had migrated southward. It was still between America and Africa, but it was beneath the ice covered land of Antarctica. Having met with skepticism and laughter, they continued to prove their theories.

Tens of thousands of years ago the climate and nature of the world we know was quite different. The fertile crescent of the Tigris and Euphrates was a land of milk and honey and Atlantis was one of the pearls of civilization. With it's concentric rings of islands and sea it was the height of society, science and art. It spawned many a smaller civilization to flights of awe and poetry while it basked in its glory. The Americas were covered by a sheet of ice and the arable land was situation closer to the South Pole and further east.

After the Great Flood when the passing of Nibiru through our solar system shook loose the ice cap over Antarctica as it rested over a slushy under layer and created the tidal waves and storms that lasted a year, the island of Lesser Antarctica was and its parent land of Antarctica were virtually ice-free. A temperate zone slowly rose from the seas and offered arable land to the Annunaki and the remains of civilization who had escaped with the biblical Noah. As they came down from the peaks they spread out and began to farm the lands.

What the Flem-Aths have wrong is the timetable. The Deluge happened before the settlement of Atlantis and continued until a series of volcanic explosions and crustal shifts once again covered the lands in ice and snow. Atlantis may well have been the home of Enki and his followers, which were originally posited to have been in lower Africa. With their proof of crustal displacement, the Flem-Aths have placed Antarctica closer to the African continent, and although Sitchin does not mention the area by name, it could well have been the land to which many of the voyages listed in the Sumerian tablets were headed.

Sitchin theorized that the lands of South America and the civilizations of Olmecs, Toltecs, Inca, Maya, Aztec and so many others were people and begun from those traveling from a southern route via Antarctica and up along the coast of Peru and Chili to the highlands. A volcanic eruption, such as that told and retold by the Egyptians and later by Homer, could well have caused the migration northward, and the subsequent rise of civilization in those areas around the areas of Lake Titicaca and Macchu Picchu would also fit in with his theory.

By blending the two sets of facts we may well find ourselves asking why would they flee to the highlands. Although Enki and his people would have known that there was not going to be another such Great Deluge, he would have known that there might have been a lesser one in which the Pacific areas would have been inundated as the crust shifted and moved, a fact heralded by the volcanic eruptions in the South Polar regions, and would have wanted to move his people to higher ground to make sure his people, his civilization and his further work in mining and science would be saved from further depredations by the elements.

Since the Olmecs were an African people as evidenced by their likenesses etched in stone, they may well have been the forerunners of the spread of civilization throughout the American continents, and one of the places from which the remains of Atlantean civilization spread outward.

As civilization took a foothold and moved outward in the wake of the retreating continental sheet of ice, the people would have spread from the highlands where they sheltered and throughout the American continent to found new and greater civilizations. Their main function was still mining, and the vast monolithic cities would last as long, and longer, as their builders, to whom a few thousand years was the blink of an immortal eye.

The Flem-Aths make an excellent case for the site of Lesser Antarctica as the Atlantis of myth and, although their belief in the coming together of a hunter-gatherer civilization to scale and create the heights of scientific and artistic achievement may be a little off, they have surely proven more of Sitchin's claims. They have also given us something that Sitchin perhaps has not mentioned, a location for Enki's stronghold and the center of his scientific workshop and civilization which, in a roundabout way, proves both theories.

As more and more of our world is known through scientific investigation and satellite imaging we will find that many of the crackpots of science will be proven in our lifetime. Although most of those crackpots hold bits and pieces of the puzzle, it is assured that the ancient Sumerians and their translator, Zecharia Sitchin, have given us a truer picture of the world than we could have hoped. It remains for us to merely open our eyes, cast off the smothering folds of scientific myopia and take hold of our future secure in the knowledge that we are not alone. The records of time, etched in the rock and sediment of the Earth, are being deciphered and it remains for us to help put the pieces together.
