Category: UFO Crash

Papagos Indian Reserv. AZ

W.H. (initials) of Yucca Valley, Calif., while still serving in the U.S. Navy, was on leave with C.C.(initials) who was just out of the U.S. army. While they were looking for desert property to buy they came upon the Papagos Indian Reservation, north of the rugged Superstition Mtns. west of Globe, Arizona. While traveling on a dirt trail, they came upon a group of military personnel guarding a crashed saucer half buried in the sand.

An unidentified flying object was reportedly photographed over Puerto Rico. No other details were given.

1947-05-00; Norway, Spitzbergen

Category: UFO Crash

May, 1947 - Spitzbergen, Norway - A report by journalist Dorothy Kilgallen stated that British scientists and airmen were excavating the wreckage of a mysterious flying ship. The Swedish military acknowledged its extraterrestrial origin and reported 17 bodies were found. The story appeared as a tiny blip for only one day in the U.S. news media before it was silenced by the military.

Grady L. Barnett reputedly found a crashed UFO

Witnesses discovered the wreckage of a metallic disc resting on the ground with bodies spewed around. The first witness on this scene was Grady L. "Barney" Barnett a civil engineer with the US Soil Conservation Service who was on a military assignment at the time. He relayed the story to some friends in early July 1947. He says the metallic disc was about 25 to 30 feet in diameter. While he was examining it, a small group of people arrived on the scene who stated that they were part of an archaeological research team from the University of Pennsylvania.

1947-06-24; USA, Washington, Mt. Rainier

Category: UFO Sighting

Nine silver saucers, flying over Mt. Rainier, were observed by Kenneth Arnold as he flew his single-engine plane over Washington.

June 24, 1947 - Kenneth Arnold's Famous UFO Sighting

PENDELTON, Ore., June 25 (AP) -- Nine bright saucer-like objects flying at "incredible speed" at 10,000 feet altitude were reported here today by Kenneth Arnold, a Boise, Idaho, pilot who said he could not hazard a guess as to what they were.

Arnold, a United States Forest Service employee engaged in searching for a missing plane, said he sighted the mysterious objects yesterday at 3 P.M. They were flying between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams, in Washington state, he said, and appeared to weave in and out of formation. Arnold said he clocked and estimated their speed at 1,200 miles an hour. [end]

Note: Arnold estimated the speed of the UFOs at around 1,200 mph, or, at 10,000 feet above sea level, Mach 1.63. The fastest aircraft in the military at that time topped out at 700 mph. It was not until 1962 that the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird took flight achieving Mach 3.2, at altitudes of 40,000 ft. or more.

Kenneth Arnold has been credited widely for having coined the term "Flying Saucer," but in reality, Arnold didn't see saucers. He described a one-piece, winged "heel" sort of craft, or a crescent with a domed top, and commented that their movement in the sky was like saucers "skipping" across water which reporters then drafted into the lexicon of contemporary lingo.

Nonetheless, what Arnold saw and described was certainly not conventional aircraft known to any civilians at that time, though we do know that Nazi Germany was working frantically on craft of similar design and shape just before the end of the war and may have perfected it, the knowledge then falling into the hands of the Allies. It is certainly possible that the US Government/Military had such advanced aircraft as part of blackops projects in '47, but we simply don't know. One then has to contend with the myriad of reports of alien pilots found at the Roswell (and other) crash sites, seen by many eye-witnesses, and the total similarity in the description of the crashed craft. It would be unlikely that the skies were being shared by men and extraterrestrials alike in the same kind of ships.

1947-07-02; USA, New Mexico, Roswell

Category: UFO Crash

July 2, 1947 - Roswell, New Mexico - The most famous and thoroughly investigated by journalists, this is the crash that launched Majestic-12. It was the first and only time the U.S. government publicly admitted it had recovered a crashed flying saucer. Within hours, the craft was whisked off to Wright-Patterson AFB and a new cover story emerged, claiming it had been only a weather balloon (Project Mogul). In recent years, the officer responsible for that cover story has recanted. Three or four humanoid bodies were recovered; one was alive for a short time.

More information.

1947-07-04; USA, Idaho, Emmet

1947-07-05; USA, New Mexico, San Agustin

Category: UFO Crash

The Roswell incident seemed just to involve debris from a craft of some sort, as no main part of the craft/bodies could be found on the Brazel ranch. This led to speculation that the main part of the craft had managed to travel on before coming to rest. The Plains of San Agustin crash became one of the main candidates for this location.

The craft came down in an area west of Socorro, New Mexico, known as the Plains of San Agustin, where witnesses discovered a strange metallic object but also dead bodies.

The first witness on the scene was Grady 'Barney' Barnett, who told some friends that in early July 1947 he had encountered a metallic, disc-shaped 'aircraft' about 25-30 feet in diameter. While he was examining it a small group of people arrived, who said that they were from an archaeological research team from the University of Pennsylvania. Barnet apparently stated the following to his friends.

"I noticed that they were standing around looking at some dead bodies that had fallen to the ground. I think there were others in the machine, which was kind of metallic...disc. It was not all that big. It seemed to be made of a metal that looked like dirty stainless steel. The machine had been split open by explosion or impact.

I tried to get close to see what the bodies were like. They were all dead as far as I could see and there were bodies inside and outside the vehicle. The ones outside had been tossed out by the the impact. They were like humans but they were not human. The heads were round, the eyes were small, and they had no hair. The eyes were oddly spaced. They were quite small by our standards and their heads were larger in proportion to their bodies than ours. Their clothing seemed to be one-piece and grey in colour. You couldn't see any zippers, belts or buttons. They seemed to me to be males and there were a number of them. I was close enough to touch them but I didn't - I was escorted away before I could.

While we were looking at them a military officer drove up in a truck with a driver and took control. He told everybody that the Army was taking over and to get out of the way. Other military personnel came up and cordoned off the area. We were told to leave the area and not to talk to anyone whatever about what we had seen...that it was our patriotic duty to remain silent".

Unfortunately Barnett died before any UFO researcher could interview him. He was described as a very respectable and honest citizen by family and friends.

However, a new informant called Gerald Anderson came forward in 1990 which backed up the Barnett story. However thanks to some excellent research done by Kevin Randle and others the Anderson story was shown to be a hoax. Also Randle tracked down all students of Universities that were in the area at the time and none of them knew anything about the alleged crash.

Again this case appears nothing more than a hoax until further evidence is presented to say otherwise.

Category: UFO Crash

On August 13, 1947, just a little more than a month after the infamous Roswell incident, six Native Americans discovered a still-smoldering metallic object crashed in the New Mexico desert. Inside they found an alien creature who, though injured, was still alive.

Hearing the approach of military troops, the men decided to keep the being from capture and care for him themselves. Taking him to their home, they found the being could communicate with them through a crystal device that conveyed images.

1947-10-04; USA, Arizona, Phoenix

Category: UFO Crash

Another alleged crash retrieval took place in Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Arizona 1947. This crash again came from Frank Scully's information and involved a craft 36 feet in diameter, along with 2 humanoid bodies.

The main witness was Selman E. Graves, a former businessman and pilot, who witnessed part of the recovery operation with 2 friends during a hunting trip. In statements Graves reported:

"There were some mine shafts - what you might call an outcropping - and a small hill, and we went up there and the three of us could look back and see everything that was taking place. And there was a large - I can best describe it as a large aluminum dome-shaped thing there, which was roughly the size of a house - it was measured to be 36 feet in diameter.

We could see that there were pitched buildings - tents - and men moving about. We at that time didn't have any idea what we were looking at. We thought it might me an observatory dome, except why would they have it down there on that piece of ground?".

Further information was provided by Scully's informant Silas Newton. He reported: "Supposedly there were a couple of small humanoids - about four and a half feet tall - that were reported to be there".

Again most mainstream UFO researcher concluded that this is another hoaxed story that had been fed to Scully who reported it in his book.
